University of Cambridge, Masters Degree in Natural Sciences (Chemistry). Specialised in synthetic organic chemistry and medicinal chemistry including a one year research project into use of emergent reaction techniques in organocatalysis.
Alastair covers work across the chemical field, including industrial minerals, electroluminescent polymers, pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals, particularly in the lipid field.
Alastair has extensive experience of drafting, filing and prosecuting patent applications at the European Patent Office (EPO) and the United Kingdom Intellectual Property Office. Alastair also files and prosecutes patent applications throughout the world, and has advised clients on worldwide patent strategy taking into account budgetary constraints. He has been involved with a number of EPO oppositions and appeals, including defending and opposing patents in the electroluminescent polymer field. Alastair also has regular involvement with freedom to operate and due diligence work, recently advising a small nutraceutical client through due diligence before a potential investment.
Alastair has experience filing and prosecuting Supplementary Protection Certificates (SPCs), and also advises on related regulatory issues. He was recently involved in referrals in this area to the Court of Justice of the European Union.
Alastair's interest in the environment and sustainable technology is reflected in his founding membership of J A Kemp's Green and Cleantech teams. The Green team are leading a successful carbon reduction programme across the firm, which recently won them Carbon Smart's blue certification. Alastair has experience of requesting access to the Green Channel for UK applications to accelerate prosecution of cases relating to 'green technology'.
Alastair has lectured on Patents and the pharma industry, the law and the reality' as part of the MSc in Drug Design course at University College London.
Alastair joined J A Kemp in 2006 and became a partner in 2016.
