Heidi has over 17 years’ experience in the patent profession, primarily gained in private practice in the UK. Prior to joining J A Kemp, she was a Partner at the London branch of a US law firm and worked in South Africa as a Consultant for several private practice firms. Heidi has also previously worked in Singapore and has been the Lead IP Counsel for a biopharmaceutical company.
She has extensive experience in the drafting and prosecution of patent applications, both in Europe and in numerous overseas jurisdictions. Her practice has included advising on filing strategies, portfolio management, validity and infringement work, and IP due diligence reviews. She has also been involved in numerous opposition proceedings before the European Patent Office, and has represented clients in oral proceedings before both the Examining and Opposition Divisions.
Heidi handles a broad range of inventions in the biotechnology and life science fields including oligonucleotide and peptide-based therapeutics, nucleic acid sequencing, vaccines and diagnostics, antibody-based technologies, stem cells, personalised medicine, genetically modified organisms, pharmaceutical formulations and Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Heidi graduated from Oxford University with a first class degree in Biological Sciences and she was awarded the R A Knox Memorial Prize for the best first-class performance in a Final Honour School. She went on to qualify as a European Patent Attorney and as a UK Chartered Patent Attorney in 2002, and received two prizes for top marks in two of the foundation level examinations. Heidi has additionally completed the formal study component for qualifying as an Australian Patent Attorney, gaining in the process a Graduate Diploma in Intellectual Property and the prize for the highest mark in the Patent Law module. She has also run a revision course for the Foreign Patent Law module of the UK foundation examinations.
Heidi grew up in Cambridge and is primarily based in J A Kemp’s Cambridge office. She joined the firm in 2016 and became a partner in 2017.
