Nigel has 30 years' experience in the patent profession, largely concentrating on European Patent Office (EPO) prosecution and opposition/appeal work in the engineering field, with special emphasis on medical devices. The vast majority of this work originates from the USA, in particular from the many Silicon Valley based patent attorney firms who are active in the medical device area and amongst whom Nigel is well known.

Clients have included academic institutions, private inventors and engineering and medical device companies, ranging from small start-ups to the largest of players.

Nigel handled the master Guglielmi Detachable Coil (GDC) patents before the EPO for The Regents of the University of California. The GDC technology related to implantable medical devices used in minimally invasive procedures for treating cerebral aneurysms to prevent rupture. The work involved successfully prosecuting the case (and numerous divisional applications) to grant before the EPO, subsequently defending them (successfully) against multiple oppositions and interventions at the EPO (up to the EPO Appeal Board) and also advising in the related pan-European national nullification and infringement actions which were successfully settled for our clients.

He has general responsibility for J A Kemp's Engineering and IT Group clients in the USA and China, where he travels regularly. Nigel is also responsible for recruitment to the Engineering and IT Group and oversees the filing procedures used to file all of the firm's new patent applications.

Nigel joined J A Kemp in 1992 after qualifying at another London-based patent attorney firm.
