Professors Shuji Nakamura, Isamu Akasaki and Hiroshi Amano have been awarded the 2014 Nobel Prize for Physics for the invention of blue light emitting diodes (LEDs). Combining blue LEDs with existing red and green LEDs has enabled a new generation of bright, energy-efficient white lamps.
