Daniel Frey

Daniel joined J A Kemp in 2024 as a trainee patent attorney and is based in the firm’s Oxford office.

He conducted his BSc and MSc studies in Biochemistry at the Technical University of Munich, for which he received the Jürgen Manchot award. In parallel, Daniel obtained an Elite Network of Bavaria certificate in Biological Physics at Bayreuth University.

His MSc thesis project explored the role of electric fields in proton transfer within the mitochondrial enzyme cytochrome c oxidase, using both quantum mechanical and molecular dynamics simulations. Daniel’s doctoral research at Oxford University focussed on KDELR, a transmembrane receptor trafficking cargo proteins from the Golgi apparatus to the endoplasmic reticulum. To investigate KDELR’s mechanism of action in cells, he employed several structural techniques, as well as cellular and biophysical assays. Daniel’s research was published in recognised academic journals and presented at two international scientific conferences.
