Edward Laughton
Ed joined J A Kemp as a trainee patent attorney in 2022 and is based in our London office.
Ed studied mechanical engineering at the University of Exeter where he specialised in computational fluid dynamics and computational engineering. His doctoral research was mainly in the field of high-order numerical methods, focussing on the development of efficient high-fidelity parallel computational fluid dynamics for problems involving moving geometries. Ed was an active developer of the scientific software Nektar++, giving him experience working with high-performance computing, massively parallel processing, and novel numerical methods. His code is used by researchers and companies around the world, including McLaren Racing and the UK Atomic Energy Authority.
Ed also has a keen interest in green energy and climate-tech. While studying for a master’s degree his final year project was to investigate natural ventilation as a passive means of preventing overheating in buildings. As part of this work he developed a computational model that combined buoyancy- and wind-driven ventilation types with LiDAR data in a custom age-of-air solver.
Outside of work Ed is an avid watcher (and sometimes player!) of sport, with a particular interest in F1 and rugby.
