J A Kemp Webinar: Is It Patent-AI-ble?: An Introduction to Protecting AI-Based Inventions for Specialists in Other Fields

It is hard to escape the increasing reach of artificial intelligence (AI) into a huge range of technology areas. Whether a company’s interests lie in personalised medicine, clinical support systems, drug discovery or autonomous vehicles, it’s likely that they and/or their competitors are now making use of bioinformatics, data mining, image processing, or other computer-based “intelligent” systems. This means that many in-house and private practice patent attorneys are, for the first time, starting to handle inventions and applications which are classified and treated by patent offices as computer-implemented inventions. This webinar will explain and explore the approaches taken by the EPO and UK IPO to inventions which apply AI to fields outside of computers themselves. The webinar is deliberately aimed at those without any previous experience of handling applications relating to computer-implemented inventions and will be pitched accordingly.

Topics covered include:

  • An introduction to the basics of AI for non-specialists
  • The approach of the EPO to applied AI inventions
  • The approach of the UK IPO to applied AI inventions
  • Worked examples
  • Strategies and advice on drafting and prosecuting applied AI patent applications in the EPO and UK IPO
