As the capabilities of AI and machine learning expand to address a wider range of challenges, the question has arisen of whether a computer can be considered to be an inventor within the framework of the patent system and, if so, how the connected issue of ownership should be dealt with. These issues are currently the subject of legal debate and appeals in a series of cases in which a machine, called DABUS, has allegedly made inventions. This webinar will take a high level look at these questions and, more generally, the current interplay between inventions in the machine learning area and the patent system, including considering how the EPO assesses patentability in this area and providing some practical advice.
