Peter Matthews

Trainee Patent Attorney

Peter joined J A Kemp as a trainee patent attorney in 2022 and is based in the firm’s Cambridge office.

Peter studied for his PhD at the University of Cambridge, conducting his research at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (MRC LMB). Here, he investigated the molecular mechanisms of synaptic transmission, responsible for information transfer and storage in the brain. His work focussed on the identification and functional characterisation of synaptic protein interactions with the AMPA receptor.

Peter has technical experience in proximity-labelling proteomics, confocal microscopy and in vitro electrophysiology. Additionally, Peter has experience in the production, purification and titration of custom Adeno-associated viruses (AAVs). During his PhD, Peter published first-author and co-author publications, notably contributing to a cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) paper published in the academic journal Nature.

Peter also has experience in the field of drug discovery. He graduated with a first class MSci Pharmacology degree from the University of Bristol and spent over a year in industry working on the development of ion channel modulators to treat various central nervous system disorders.
