Scott Macken

Scott joined J A Kemp as a trainee patent attorney in 2023 and is based in our Oxford office.

Scott received a Masters degree in Chemistry from the University of Oxford. During his degree, he completed an internship with a sport law firm which focused on defending athletes accused of doping. This looked at pharmacokinetics and the methods used for drugs testing. His final year was spent working in the field of microscopy and biophysics improving single-molecule imaging of proteins (mass photometry). This required an understanding of the optics, protein physics, and image processing behind the technique.

While at university, Scott also helped found a start-up using a patent for a novel carbon capture process based on solid-state catalysis which gave him an insight into the Oxford start-up ecosystem.
