Joe Simon-Brown
Joe has a particular interest in helping young and growing businesses develop and execute an IP strategy. He helps them to secure relevant protection for their innovations, to manage and minimise IP risk and advises them when their rights are infringed. Joe particularly enjoys developing patent portfolios and relishes working closely with inventors to draft new patent applications.
Joe’s clients include startups, university spin-outs, technology transfer organisations, as well as large multi-nationals, and he understands how to cater for the specific needs of each. He has particular experience advising clients with a business model based on out-licensing intellectual property rights. Such businesses require a robust approach to IP enforcement. He has experience all through the business life cycle from start-up to IPO and beyond.
As well as his holistic approach to IP strategy, Joe is recognised by clients for his ability to quickly grasp new concepts, identify potential inventions and translate those clearly into registered intellectual property rights. With a technical background in physics, he covers a wide range of technical areas including software, digital health, image processing, electronics, optics, semiconductors, mechanical devices, sports equipment, medical devices, engineering and aerospace. He also has a particular interest in technology with cross-over with the life sciences.
Joe is passionate about entrepreneurship and helping startups to establish themselves, win investment and ultimately grow into successful businesses through good management of their IP. He is involved with many entrepreneurship programmes and accelerators, as a teacher and business mentor.
Joe started his career at the London office of J A Kemp in 2011 before joining our Cambridge-based team in 2018 to help service our clients in the area. He became a partner of the firm in 2022.
