Immunology and Immunotherapy
Understanding of the complexities of the immune system is critical to diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diseases ranging from allergy to cancer. Harnessing of elements of the body’s immune response to treat diseases by immunotherapy (e.g. immuno-oncology) is a significant area of therapeutic development.
J A Kemp has substantial and long-standing experience dealing with intellectual property rights concerned with all aspects of immunology and immunotherapy. Complementary to our leading practice in Antibodies and Biologics, our work in this field encompasses inventions comprising immunomodulatory peptides, classical small molecule pharmaceuticals, targeted cytokines/chemokines, modified antigen receptors (e.g. CAR-T), vaccines, and other complex cell-based approaches.
Whatever the focus, we have expertise in drafting claims for such technology in the appropriate format for worldwide prosecution, and particular expertise in prosecution of this subject matter before the European Patent Office (EPO). Our work in this area is led by several members of our Biotechnology and Life Sciences team who held first degrees and/or PhDs in immunology. We ensure that we keep up to date with the latest developments in this fast-moving field. Our practice also includes obtaining Supplementary Protection Certificates (SPCs) for all forms of immunotherapy.
